My ongoing research looks at circular economy innovation in athleisure clothing. The study aims to ask questions about the preconceived materiality and overproduction of athleisure clothing by disassembling the systems of athleisure clothing production, which leads to pollutive consumption patterns. This is being done by developing experimental textiles and garment prototypes in collaboration with AI to gather consumer feedback before translating the designs into on-demand garments and layers with natural materials using hand-stitched couture techniques and seamless techniques. including weavers, designers, knitting experts, and industrial facilities. Consumers will be invited to experience these garments through exhibitions, performances and user testing opportunities. The prototypes and their feedback will act as proposals for the ‘degrowth’ of the wasteful athleisure garment industry practices, including forecasting, material selection, limiting resource use, conserving human and natural capital, and maximising the reuse, repair and regeneration opportunities while developing athleisure garments within a circular economy.
