Doha Firestaion Artist in Residence

In 2017-18, I was awarded a 9-month residency by Qatar Museums to explore materials and research storytelling through Al- Sadu weaving patterns, natural dyes and handspun wool.

The final works pay homage to Doha, Qatar, my home for four years during the most transformative years of my life. When I was learning to live away from my comfort zone and starting my journey as an artist and researcher, the city gave me a more unique auditory experience than anywhere else in the world. The sound of water splashing at the Corniche, the music at Dhow boats, the call of prayer, construction and the amalgamation of voices in the Souq, all constructed a soundscape representative of a city rooted in culture yet progressive in vision. During my residency at Qatar Museums, I recorded all these unique rhythms of Doha around me and weaved them wave by wave to tangibility in the form of a deconstructed tapestry using the colours, construction and language of the Bedouin storytelling technique of Al Sadu.

They have been exhibited in Qatar and Russia and are in the permanent collection of Qatar Museums.
